World and Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi has placed first at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Birmigham, confirming the Greek athletes domination in pole vault.
The Diamond leader recently set a season’s best of 4.83m and started as the favourite in a field that included world leader Jenn Suhr, Canada’s Alysha Newman, world bronze medallist Robeilys Peinado and 2015 world champion Yarisley Silva.
The Rio Olympic gold medalist won the competition with a best effort of 4.75 meters, a height that exceeded the third attempt.
Stefanidis will compete again on August 24 in Paris and then take part in the final of the event in Brussels.
"The most important thing for me is winning today, especially as it was under difficult conditions. It's important to jump high in the air during tough situations as you are preparing you for the World Championship," Stefanidis said after her win.
