Located near the village of Kastania on the southern tip of the Peloponnese, is one of the most impressive caves of Greece, Kastania Cave.
The extraordinary cave which covers 1,500 square meters, contains some of the rare stalactites and stalagmites in Europe, estimated to be around 3 million years old.
Approximately a half hour’s drive from Neapoli, according to Greek mythology, the ’home of Hades’ is a must see!
The cave was formed from limestones from the Jurassic age (199.6 million to 145.5 million years ago), as a result of geological turmoil and chemical reactions.
Inside the cave, calcium carbonate in crystalline form enriched with metal oxides of the subsoil, creates a magnificent seven color palette.
Nature needed three million years to create this impressive formation which can be viewed up close, as visitors can participate in a walking tour that is quite easy and suitable for all age groups.
While witnessing with your own eyes one of the most impressive caves of Greece, you may also come across the cave’s noble resident insect, the deaf and blind dolichopoda (a genus of cave crickets).
