The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has launched a “Global Citizen Scholarship Program” together with the American Field Service’s (AFS) Intercultural Programs, to give 50 high school students from Greece the opportunity to participate in an exchange program abroad.

AFS is an inclusive community of global citizens: students, families and volunteers determined to build bridges between cultures. The not-for-profit network has operations in 60 countries and exchange programs in 99 countries.

The new scholarship program will help Greek students develop the global competence needed to collaborate and communicate across cultures and create personal ties between people in other countries and Greece.

"Intercultural education prepares young people to take their place as future leaders and change-makers," President and CEO of AFS, Daniel Obst stated.

"Stavros Niarchos Foundation's generous grant demonstrates the Foundation's commitment to create and foster transformational and long-lasting impact on Greek youth and society," he continued.

Full and partial scholarships will be available for Greek youth to attend school abroad and live with a local host family for one academic year, semester, or trimester. AFS will conduct a competitive selection process based on diversity, academic merit and socioeconomic status.

The online application portal will open late 2019, with the first cohort of scholars selected in early 2020.
