His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Australia, is currently on his first pastoral visit to Adelaide since his enthronement in June.
His five day schedule of community and official events included Doxology at St Nectarios Monastery (Croydon Park), Liturgy at St George Church (Mile End), and visits to other churches.
The Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall, members of both the South Australian and the Federal Parliament and the Greek community of South Australia warmly welcomed Archbishop Makarios when he arrived on August 31.
The Premier expressed his pleasure in welcoming Archbishop Makarios to Adelaide, stressing that “it is a great honour and privilege to have Archbishop Makarios with us these days. This is a historic day for all of us and particularly for all the Greek people from South Australia. We hope this is the first of many visits to South Australia.”
To make his visit to Adelaide, His Eminence last night attended a dinner hosted by Saint Basil’s Homes - SA, where he addressed attendees.
Below is an excerpt from the address in English:
"When I met with the President of Greece, a short while before I came here, I told him that from the information I had, the best Greeks who exist today, are the Greeks of Australia. I will continue to say this, not just because I heard it, but because I am now living it.
And why is this?
Because some of you, who were of the first immigrants who came here, but also those before you, your fathers, your grandfathers, your grandmothers, left Greece not to go to Germany, not to go to America, but to go to a place, for which to go to this place, you needed to have courage and daring, and make a big decision to accomplish it. What does this mean? That the people who left Greece to come to Australia, were not just by chance.
They had courage, they had faith, they had hope and daring. This is why they were able to come here, and they flourished, and they progressed and made us proud, not only within the Greek Community, but to the whole of Australia. I believe that with these elements, and with these provisions in my luggage, I too arrived here in Australia.
I came with much faith in God, with a lot of hope for the future, but also with much love. And I say this, and I mean it. I am here because I love you.
I am here and give of my time, - you know, time is the most precious thing that a person can possess- and I am literally consumed for my flock, because I love you, and I believe that you are not only worthy for us to be consumed, but for us to sacrifice ourselves for you if necessary, even to give our life, because you are truly very blessed people and because you are worthy of the love of the Archbishop. And not only you who are here in this room now, but also those who are outside. Within my heart, I feel the intense conviction, that I am the Archbishop of all Greeks.
And I want us to advance all together and unified. With Christ in front, because this is what our ancestors taught us. Not divided. Unity. We will advance with unity and we will progress. And this is my purpose. And we will succeed. And we will accomplish it."

"Όταν συναντήθηκα με τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας στην Ελλάδα, λίγο πριν έρθω εδώ, του είπα ότι οι πληροφορίες που έχω είναι, ότι οι καλύτεροι Έλληνες που υπάρχουν σήμερα, είναι οι Έλληνες της Αυστραλίας. Αυτό θα το συνεχίζω να το λέω, όχι μόνο διότι το έχω ακούσει, αλλά τώρα πια διότι το ζω.
Και γιατί συμβαίνει αυτό;
Διότι κάποιοι από σας, που είσθε από τους πρώτες μετανάστες, αλλά οι προηγούμενοι από σας, οι πατεράδες σας, οι παππούδες σας, και οι γιαγιάδες σας, έφυγαν από την Ελλάδα, όχι για να πάνε στη Γερμανία, όχι για να πάνε στην Αμερική, αλλά για να πάνε σε ένα τόπο, που για να πας σαυτό το τόπο, έπρεπε να ‘χεις θάρρος και τόλμη, και να πάρεις μια μεγάλη απόφαση. Αυτό τί σημαίνει; Οι άνθρωποι που έφυγαν από την Ελλάδα για να έρθουν στην Αυστραλία δεν ήταν τυχαίοι.
Είχαν θάρρος, είχαν πίστη, είχαν ελπίδα, και τόλμη. Γι’ αυτό έφθασαν εδώ, και πρόκοψαν και προόδευσαν και μας έκαναν υπερήφανους, όχι μόνο ένδο-κοινοτικά, δηλαδή στην κοινότητά μας, αλλά μας έκαναν υπερήφανους σε όλη την Αυστραλία. Πιστεύω ότι με αυτά τα στοιχεία, και με αυτά τα εφόδια στις αποσκευές μου, έφτασα και εγώ στην Αυστραλία.
Ήρθα με πολύ πίστη στο Θεό, με πολύ ελπίδα για το μέλλον, αλλά και με πολύ αγάπη. Κι’ αυτό το λέω και το εννοώ. Είμαι εδώ γιατί σας αγαπώ. Είμαι εδώ και δίνω το χρόνο μου, που ξέρετε, ο χρόνος είναι ότι πιο πολύτιμο υπάρχει στον άνθρωπο, και αναλώνομαι κυριολεκτικά για το ποίμνιό μου, γιατί σας αγαπώ, και γιατί πιστεύω ότι εσείς αξίζετε, όχι μόνο να αναλωθούμε, αλλά και να θυσιαστούμε αν χρειαστεί, ακόμη και τη ζωή μας να δώσουμε αν χρειαστεί, γιατί πραγματικά είσθε πολύ ευλογημένοι άνθρωποι, και γιατί αξίζετε την αγάπη του Αρχιεπισκόπου. Και όχι μόνο εσείς που είσθε σήμερα σ’ αυτήν την αίθουσα, αλλά και αυτοί που είναι απέξω. Έχω έντονη την πεποίθηση μέσα στην καρδιά μου, ότι είμαι ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος όλων των Ελλήνων.
Και θέλω όλοι μαζί να προχωρούμε ενωμένοι. Με τον Χριστό μπροστά, διότι αυτό μας δίδαξαν οι προγονοί μας. Όχι διάσπαση. Ενότητα. Με την ενότητα θα προχωρήσουμε και θα προοδεύσουμε. Και αυτός είναι ο σκοπός μου. Και θα επιτύχουμε. Και θα καταφέρουμε."
