Greece and UK discuss shipping ahead of impending Brexit

Greece’s Shipping Minister, Ioannis Plakiotakis and UK Minister for Maritime Affairs Nusrat Ghani met on Wednesday to discuss key aspects of maritime cooperation between Greece and the United Kingdom, in view of upcoming Brexit developments.

The Greek Shipping Minister noted that Greece is keen to ensure normal shipping activity and to also sustain the open international maritime markets enjoyed by both countries, regardless of the outcome of Brexit negotiations.

On her part, Ghani presented the latest political developments pertaining to the UK's departure from the EU and the specific arrangements for the maritime sector in the post-Brexit era.

During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed issues of maritime education, cooperation within the framework of the European Maritime Safety Agency, as well as the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) environmental agenda.

Both Plakiotakis and Ghani agreed to a mutual positive assessment when the IMO elects its new council members in November.

Plakiotakis also had the opportunity to brief his British counterpart on the ministry's political priorities, focusing on the competitiveness of shipping and the strengthening of the Greek maritime cluster, the upgrading of maritime education and the further enhancement of Greek ports to major shipping and transport hubs, through potential investments that will upgrade their operation.
