Greece’s airports record a 4.9 percent increase in passenger traffic

From January through to August 2019, Greece’s airports have welcomed 2.1 million more passengers than the same period last year.

Greece’s Civil Aviation Authority announced that passenger traffic in Greek airports grew 4.9 percent in the January-August period compared with the same period in 2018, which totalled 45,839,842 passengers.

The report also confirmed that the total number of flights in Greek airports was 377,720 (of which 147,621 were domestic and 230,099 international), up 4.3 percent compared with the same period last year.
In August alone, which is peak season for the country, passenger traffic in Greek airports totalled 10,313,725, up 5.5 percent from 2018, while the number of flights rose 2.7 percent to 78,537.

The airports with the highest passenger traffic in August were Athens, Heraklion, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, and Corfu. In the eight-month period from January to August, the airport of Ioannina recorded the biggest percentage increase in passenger traffic (29.9 percent), followed by the islands of Naxos (21.3 percent) and Lemnos (19 percent).

The number of foreign passengers in August reached almost 4 million (3,987,722), up 6.4 percent compared to 2018.
