Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, on the sidelines of the annual summit of the international organisation in New York.
Both leaders discussed the Cyprus issue and climate change with the Greek Prime Minister calling his meeting with Guterres "very meaningful, with a fruitful discussion," and thanked the Secretary General "for his very substantial contribution and his continued efforts to resolve this issue and I reiterated Greece's unequivocal support for the just demands of the Greek Cypriot community, so as to finally reach a just and viable solution to this long-standing problem that has been tormenting Hellenism for 45 years."
Mitsotakis noted that both men also discussed the so-called ‘green agenda’ for tackling climate change, which the Secretary General considers his agenda's top priority.
"I reiterated Greece's unequivocal support for the UN's initiative to achieve the goals of sustainable development and presented our country's plan on how Greece could be at the forefront of the European struggle against climate change," he noted.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis pointed out that "the natural environment and its protection is not only an obligation to future generations but also an opportunity to showcase the country's greatest competitive advantage."
"That is why by the end of the year, the government will present its updated strategy for achieving the objectives set at the Paris Agreement conference and this will be a bold, ambitious strategy at the forefront of the European initiative to address this critical issue," he concluded.
