NATO expects Turkey to respect Cyprus sovereignty

Share

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, said that he expects Turkey to respect international law when asked about Turkey's activities in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone and NATO's operations in the Aegean.

Stoltenberg made the comments during an interview published with the Sunday edition of the Greek newspaper "Kathimerini".

Secretary General said that NATO patrols in the Aegean are there to deal with refugee and migrant flows which will continue, but noted that the presence of NATO ships was to create the conditions for the two sides to come closer for a joint management of the problem.

"NATO does not have orders to stop the boats. Our orders are to bring Greece, Turkey and the EU closer," he said.

He said the NATO allies were informed of Turkey's operation in north Syria on Wednesday, shortly before it began.
