Greece’s Citizen Protection Minister, Michalis Chrisochoidis confirmed on Thursday that refugee families numbering a total of at least 20,000 individuals will be transferred from the Greek islands to the mainland.
The Minister disclosed the plan during a briefing of ND deputies on the basic regulations of a new draft bill on granting refugees asylum, which is currently on public consultation.
According to Chrisochoidis, families will be distributed equally and housed in hotels and facilities.
"MPs had no problem in relation to their voting districts accepting refugees, especially since the minister assured them that there will be equal distribution among regions,” said ND's parliamentary secretary Stavros Kalafatis noting that housing families in military camps was ruled out.
