Local residents from a village in Naxos warmly applauded Efraimina Andri, a schoolgirl holding the flag and parading on her own during the “Oxi Day’ celebrations yesterday, on October 28, as she is the only student who attends the elementary school at Apollo.

Wearing the traditional costume and holding the flag high, the 8-year-old was accompanied by her school teacher. The young girl was very happy to be representing her school as she walked through the local villages and was warmly greeted by residents, the local priest and the Mayor of Koronida.

After the march, she also took part in the local ceremony, which included a Doxology service at a seaside church and the wreath-laying took place at the Heroes Monument.

Over recent years, Apollo Elementary School has only had a handful of students and this year for the first time, there is only one student.
