Greek sport is in mourning after the tragic death of 21-year-old water polo goalkeeper Adamantios Mantis, who was killed after being crushed by a car near Glyfada, Athens.

The young athlete from Chios Nautical Club passed away in the early hours of Sunday after a car ran into him and despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors were not able to keep him alive.

The key goalkeeper for the national teen's team at the 2015 European Championships held in Baku, was this summer transferred to Chios and helped his team beat PAOK in late October, with a 9-5 victory.

According to SKAI's current affairs program "With You", the 21-year-old athlete was a passenger in a 20-year-old friend’s car. While driving on the road to Glyfada, the two young men heard a strange noise and stopped the vehicle in the left lane to see what was happening. Mantis got out of the car to see if there was any damage and that is when another vehicle, also driven by a young man, crashed straight into the young athlete, causing his death.

All three young men were seriously injured and taken by ambulance to hospital where Mantis was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors tried everything in their power to keep him alive but unfortunately, they did not succeed and on Sunday morning the 21-year-old took his last breath.
