The European Film Academy announced their nominations for the annual European Film Awards and leading Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos film ‘The Favourite’ has picked up an impressive four nominations, including ‘European Director of the Year.’

“The Favourite” received 10 Oscar nominations this year, with star Olivia Colman, who plays a gout-stricken Queen Anne, picking up the Best Actress Academy Award.

Based on the true story of Queen Anne, played by Colman, and the dysfunctional court set up by the last member of the Stewart dynasty, the film touches on universal themes, such as love, competition, and power.

“I was interested mainly in the three central characters, their power, their fragile relations and how the behaviour of so few people could turn the tide of war and the fate of a country. For me, it is also a love story with comic, dramatic and dark moments,” Lanthimos said.
