German Ambassador to Greece, Ernst Reichel stated that Germany fully agrees "with Greece on the need for a new and more solidarity asylum system within the European Union."

The comments were made to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on 'Prospects for Europe: Germany and Greece in dialogue,' co-organised in Drama by ELIAMEP and the European Academy of Berlin.

"We believe that the Dublin system needs to be revised and another system set up in which each country assumes its share of responsibility for migrants and it is not only the countries of first reception that carry a disproportionate burden," he stated.

When asked if the refugee-migration issue will be a priority for the German presidency of the European Union during the second half of 2020, the German ambassador replied: "Yes, I believe so, but both the European Commission and the German government believe that we must tackle this issue much earlier than the second half of 2020. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has already announced that the revision of migration policies will be a priority for the Commission's work."
