On Thursday, December 19, 2019, Protopresbyter Father Giorgos Metallinos, a prominent Greek theologian, historian, author, and professor, passed away at the age of 79, leaving behind his wife Barabara, three children and ten grandchildren.

Father Giorgos was a much loved and important theologian of the Greek Orthodox Church, as he was an author to over 40 significant books and essays. He was distinguished by his faithfulness to the Orthodox Church,  bringing to light a lot of history about the Greek Church, especially in the modern age, and teaching theology was one of his main passions.

Father Metallinos

Father Metallinos was born on March 11, 1940, in Kerkyra, where he attended school. He went on to graduate at the University of Athens in Theology and Classical Literature. After his Military service was completed in 1965, he became a research assistant at the Department of Patrology and then went to Germany for post-graduate studies until 1975. During this time he also went to London where he conducted research studies. In 1971, he was ordained a deacon and a presbyter and became Doctor of Theology (University of Athens) and Doctor of Philosophy-History (University of Cologne).

In 1985 he became a Professor at the School of Theology at the University of Athens, teaching History of Spirituality during the Post-Byzantine era, Theology of Worship and Byzantine History. He also served as Dean of the School of Theology between 2004 and 2007.
