Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced his determination to take Turkey to the International Court of Justice in the Hague to settle the perennial disputes in the Aegean.
Mitsotakis made the comments during an interview published in the Sunday edition of Sunday Vema, claiming that he will appeal to the court to resolve the issue of the continental shelf and maritime zones in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.
"I think, yes, we have to say clearly that if we can't work out a solution with Turkey, then we have to try the matter at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. And to be perfectly clear, I am referring to the definition of the continental shelf and maritime zones in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. If we believe - and we believe - that we are in the right, we have nothing to fear in terms of outcomes from the Court" said Prime Minister Mitsotakis.
Mitsotakis reiterated his government’s attempts to build good relations with Turkey, referencing his recent meeting with the Turkish President in London, but he made it clear that "it does not mean that Greece will not defend its sovereign rights by all means at its disposal."
The Prime Minister also referred to his forthcoming visit to the US, saying that Greece and the US are closer than ever and that Greece is a reliable ally of America and he expects this to be confirmed not only by words but also by actions.
"US support for the East Med pipeline recognizes the need to diversify Europe's energy sources, and with the construction of the Alexandroupolis floating gas station, Greece makes its mark on the world energy map. With President Trump, of course, we will also discuss investment. He is also distinguished for his business acumen. So I'm sure American companies wouldn't want to miss out on participating in Greece's success story!"
