Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will shut its Athens office.
The Prime Minister made the announcement following his meeting with IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva in Washington on the sidelines of his official visit to the US.
At the meeting with Georgieva, Mitsotakis was joined by Development and Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis, government spokesman Stelios Petsas, the PM's economic advisor Alex Patelis and Greece's representative at the IMF Michalis Psalidopoulos.
"I welcome our common decision to close down the IMF office within the next months and continue to cooperate as a country that has emerged from the austere framework of supervision by the IMF," Mitsotakis told IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva in Washington.
The closure of the IMF office in Greece comes as the country has made a significant economic recovery and is re-entering the markets.
The International Monetary Fund was one of the key players along with other eurozone countries that funded Greece’s bailouts and did not enjoy a positive image in the eyes of the Greek public.
