Greek Foreign Minister and PM talks to General Haftar

Following his meeting with Libya's renegade General Khalifa Haftar in Athens today, Greece's Foreign Minister Dendias said that Haftar had agreed with all of Greece's positions, including the need to recognise that the controversial maritime boundary deal with Turkey is illegal and invalid.

"We encouraged the commander to take part with a constructive spirit in Berlin's procedure and try to achieve a ceasefire and the restoration of safety in Libya, by removing mercenaries," the FM also said.

Dendias continued that Athens should have been a participant in Sunday's Berlin conference on Libya.

Unnamed sources have stated that Greece was removed from the international conference, after Turkey pressured the German Government. This decision was criticised by Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Mitsotakis also expressed that Athens will veto any agreement brought before the European Union for approval, unless the contentious agreement is dropped.

Haftar agreed "in principle" on Thursday to attend a peace conference in Berlin on Sunday, after Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj, Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya signalled he would be present.
