Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment have won the initial rights to build an integrated resort and casino development for Greece’s Hellinikon Project.
Approved by the Hellenic Gaming Commission (HGC), it is set to be delivered in conjunction with Greek construction firm Gek Terna and follows last week’s news that Hard Rock International, who was the only competitor, was rejected in Greece’s casino tender.
The HGC announced Hard Rock’s tender documents did not show sufficient construction experience or the ability to meet financing criteria.
According to reports, HRI now has until Monday 3 February to bring forward any objections and if the issue is to go before an arbitration authority, it could take a month to resolve.
MGE’s project is to be known as Inspire Athens and is a development the company says would create in excess of 7,000 jobs for locals during and after construction.
Incorporating a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, convention centre, shopping, restaurants, bars, casino and “a comprehensive mix of premium amenities,” MGE states that its proposal will launch “a new era of tourism growth and economic prosperity for all of Greece and the entire region”.
Upon completion, the firm expects an increase of at least ten percent in international tourism in the Attica region, as well as the contribution of millions of euros annually to both the government and the people of Greece in the form of taxes, infrastructure improvements, and public services.
