One of the biggest street cleaning operations is taking place every Sunday in the Athenian suburbs of Exarchia and Kolonaki.
Following similar cleanups in recent weeks in Metaxourgeio, Votanikos and Petralona, crews from the Municipality of Athens’ sanitation department using five large sweepers and five street washing machines, cleaned and washed the streets of two densely populated areas in the heart of Athens.
The operation was carried out early Sunday morning in Exarchia and in Kolonaki, where on weekdays the roads are very congested.
Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said the initiative would become a tradition on Sundays in Athens. “What is changing in the capital is [people’s] understanding of the need for daily life to be civilised,” he said.
The initiative was City Hall’s way of ensuring “the citizens’ right to enjoy their city, clean,” he added.
