Originally from Sydney, Australia, owner Maria Zarglis has been in the nail industry since 1996. In 2018, she decided to take a leap and open up her own shop ‘MZ-NailZ'.
“I saw this empty space when I used to go to the gym next door and I remember thinking ‘I like this shop’… I didn’t have 1 euro in my pocket but I was determined to open up the shop. Everyone in the family helped. I didn’t get a decorator, I did it all on my own. I knew what kind of furniture I wanted. Everyone didn’t believe I would open in two months, but I did it!” Maria recalled.
Nails are like little canvases that expresses one’s personality and from 9am-10pm every Monday through to Saturday, Maria is in her shop making everyone who walks through the door feel relaxed, pampered and refreshed.
“I love my job, it relaxes me. I might be stressed, I might have a headache but when I start working, I forget about everything else.”
MZ-NailZ has proven to be a local favourite. There are lots of nail salons in Néa Smírni, but what makes Maria different and popular, is that she makes every client feel special and unique. “Apart from doing their nails, you are also a psychologist. They talk and forget about their problems here. They feel very free, they relax and some fall asleep during their pedicure,” she continued.

On the great beauty debate: Acrylic vs Shellac vs Gel, the beautician states for her, shellac is better as it lasts longer, doesn’t ruin the nails and comes off easier. It is better than gel as they tend to fall off soon after being put on, and if removed poorly there is a high risk of damage towards the natural nail. Alternatively, acrylic are very strong and long-lasting, but they can also make nails weak and brittle.
The latest nail trend Maria notes is ‘The airbrush’. Airbrushed manicures — using a machine to spray nail polish onto the nail — is a popular technique from the ’80’s used to create amazing designs, patterns and illustrations on nails. “When clients see someone else doing it, they want it as well…All the celebrities do this, there are lots of colours and it comes our nicer, it’s a trend,” Maria added.
MZ-NailZ has runway-inspired designs on offer that are constantly updated, plus endless colour combinations. Good luck trying to choose just one!
For Maria, her favourite nail design on her own nails is the french manicure. The classic look is defined by a sheer pink nail with a white tip, which according to her the look is “mad!.. it looks really nice!”
“Every year, everything is in fashion. There are thousands of colours…My clients trust me, they go ‘do whatever you want,’ so depending on the colour, I do whatever I want,” Maria added.
