The Acropolis, the crowning jewel of the Greek capital

By 4 years ago

The Acropolis of Athens is the most striking architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world.

The magnificent temple on the Acropolis, the Parthenon, was built between 447 and 432 BC in the Age of Pericles, and was dedicated to the city’s patron deity Athena.

Foundations of the Parthenon were made of limestone, and the columns were made of Pentelic marble, a material that was utilized for the first time.
