A 40-year-old man is in quarantine at the university Regional General Hospital of Patras, after being admitted with symptoms resembling those of the deadly coronavirus Covid-19.

According to media reports, the man returned to Greece on Sunday from Italy on a ship.

Samples were sent to the Pasteur Institute in Athens and are expected back on Tuesday. Until then, he will stay isolated at the hospital.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, Greek health authorities have tested more than 100 suspected cases, all tested negative, so far.

With the virus spreading in neighbouring Italy, Greek authorities are in high alert, however, despite several emergency meetings in the last 24 hours, they decided not to quarantine passengers arriving from Italy.

The news coming from Italy where six people have died and more than 200 have been infected, has also caused panic amongst Greeks who have “raided” pharmacies for masks, thus triggering a shortage.

At the time this article was written, there have been no instances of coronavirus cases in Greece.
