Locals in Lesvos don't allow boat of migrants to disembark

Hundreds of local residents in Lesvos gathered at the port of Thermi on Sunday to prevent arriving migrants from disembarking on the island.

They also gathered in several places around the island to prevent buses carrying migrants from arriving at the grossly overcrowded Moria camp.

It is reported that during the ordeal, some residents at the Port of Thermi turned on members of NGOs and journalists.

The islanders want the Moria camp, home to nearly 20,000 refugees and migrants, to be shut down and its residents transferred to the mainland. Many locals also oppose building a closed camp to house arriving migrants and refugees.

The residents of Lesvos aren't just angry that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has attempted to weaponise the migration crisis, but also the Greek government for not having a more effective policy.
