Greece drawn into tricky Group 3 of UEFA Nations League

By 4 years ago

Greece will compete against Moldova, Slovenia and Kosovo in Group 3 of League C in the 2020/2021 UEFA Nations League.

On Tuesday evening, the draw for the 2020/2021 Nations League took place, with Greece pitted against Moldova, Slovenia and Kosovo in Group 3 of League C. All group matches will take place between September and November 2020.

Matchday 1: 3–5 September 2020

Matchday 2: 6–8 September 2020

Matchday 3: 8–10 October 2020

Matchday 4: 11–13 October 2020

Matchday 5: 12–14 November 2020

Matchday 6: 15–17 November 2020

Finals: 2, 3, 6 June 2021

Relegation play-offs: 24, 25, 28, 29 March 2022

On paper, Greece will certainly start as favourites for promotion to League B, but this group certainly isn’t an easy one. While Moldova should be beaten comfortably, both Slovenia and Kosovo have strength, and they are two teams which won’t fear the Greeks on the pitch. It’s worth noting that Kosovo have a chance to qualify for UEFA Euro 2020 through the playoffs after earning promotion from League D in the 2018/2019 Nations League.

In Euro 2020 qualifying, Greece finished in third place of Group J, while Slovenia claimed fourth spot of Group G and Kosovo earned a credible third position of Group A.

Greece failed to earn promotion from League C in 2018 after finishing behind Finland and Hungary in Group 2.

The top team from each group will earn promotion to League B. Countries in last position of their respective groups will compete in a two-legged playoff to avoid relegation to League D. Only two teams will be relegated from League C to League D.

It has been rumoured that the Nations League will play a small role in the European qualifiers for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, however, no details were released regarding this matter. All reports point that teams in League A will have a second-chance opportunity to qualify for the World Cup via the Nations League. However, Greece can use the 2020/2021 Nations League as a great opportunity to gain promotion to League B and receive a better chance of qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024.
