Greece closes educational institutions and suspends public gatherings in 3 regions amid coronavirus outbreak

Greek authorities on Wednesday announced that all schools and universities will be closed and public gatherings should be suspended in the regions of Achaia, Ilia and Zakynthos at least until Saturday.

The precautionary measures were announced by the Health Ministry after the 9th COVID-19 case in the country was confirmed.

According to spokesman Sotiris Tsiodras, closed are:

  • Schools of all education levels
  • Archaeological sites, theatres, cinemas, sports facilities, museums, and places where many people come together.

It is reported that the patient, a 67-year-old man from Patras may have infected dozens of people. The man had traveled to Israel and Egypt together with a group of 53 people. His co-passengers, aged between 27-70 years old, were not only from his hometown Amaliadia and others towns in Ilia Prefecture in Peloponnese, but also from Zakynthos.

The patient is in a "critical" condition and currently in isolation at a public hospital in Patras.

Health authorities are still trying to track down the people who have been in close contact with the infected man since he returned to Greece.
