Cyprus placed in UEFA Nations League group with Montenegro, Azerbaijan and Luxembourg

By 4 years ago

Cyprus have been drawn into Group 1 of League C in this fall’s UEFA Nations League, along with Montenegro, Azerbaijan, and Luxembourg.

After finishing third in Group 3 of League C in the first edition of the Nations League, the Cypriot national team remain in League C for the upcoming 2020-2021 UEFA Nations League.

Cyprus have played Montenegro three times before, with all matches ending in draws while Cyprus have played Luxembourg three times as well and have won all three meetings. Cyprus have never played against Azerbaijan. All home matches will be played at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

If Cyprus can finish atop the group, they will be promoted to League B, and earn certain advantages for qualification for the 2024 European championships (teams in the higher leagues will contest the two World Cup tickets from the Nations League).

Conversely, should they finish last in this group, they will fall into a relegation playoff and potentially fall into League D, the lowest tier in the competition. This will be their first competition under the new Belgian manager, Johan Walem.

Cyprus’ full schedule in Group C1:

  • September 5 vs. Montenegro
  • September 8 vs. Azerbaijan
  • October 9 @ Luxembourg
  • October 12 @ Azerbaijan
  • November 12 vs. Luxembourg
  • November 15 @ Montenegro
