90 die from influenza

Greece’s National Public Health Organisation on Thursday reported that some 90 people lost their lives from influenza so far this winter season, including 7 people in the last week.

Of these, 72 were treated at intensive care units, while 18 were not. Of the 90, 83 patients belonged to high-risk groups, and only 33 of the deceased were vaccinated against the flu.

A total of 238 cases of confirmed influenza have so far been recorded this winter.

According to the National Public Health Organisation, the flu is still in a period of increased activity with a downward trend.

Meanwhile, Supreme Court prosecutor Vassilis Pliotas on Thursday sent a circular to all the country's prosecutors asking them to immediately intervene when there is any violation of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Pliotas noted that article 285 of the Penal Code foresees stiff penalties for those who violate the measures ordered to prevent the spread of a dangerous disease.

Specifically, the prosecutor said "with this behaviour they harm or place at risk fundamentally protected legal goods, as are life and physical health," adding that "your intervention when there is legal cause is self-evident."
