Government announces measures to mitigate impact of virus on tourism industry

Greece’s Minister for Tourism, Harry Theoharis on Thursday met with the European Commission Vice-President for Promoting the European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas with whom he discussed the effects of the coronavirus epidemic on Greek tourism.

The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the Lighting Ceremony of the Olympic Flame in Ancient Olympia, which was held without the presence of spectators due to the coronavirus, the ministry said.

Theoharis briefed Schinas on the initiatives the ministry intends to take with the World Health Organization (WHO) to mitigate the effects of the virus crisis, but most importantly to prepare for the next day. Yesterday, WHO declared the coronavirus spread globally a pandemic.

Meanwhile, also on Thursday the Ministry of Tourism announced that it has set up a crisis management committee for coronavirus that would inform the tourism industry on the latest developments.

The ministry released an online set of protection guidelines for travellers in Greece, which can be found here.
