Greece reinforces Kastanies border

Late yesterday near the Evros border, Greece started reinforcing the Kastanies crossing with concrete blocks in order to keep the illegal migrants out.

The Greek Army have been fortifying the Greek wall as the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan still refuses to engage in the EU directive, which aims to make all migrants move back from the border and return into Turkey.

Τhe Turkish side continued to provoke Greece by lobbing Molotov Cocktails and starting fires at several points along the border fence, to try to weaken the steel fence.

The Turkish army have also been firing tear gas over the fence in a plight to assist the Migrants, in cutting through the wire fence. To counteract this aggression, the Greek Army have deployed special vehicles equipped with massive turbines.

Greece was the entry point for hundreds of thousands of migrants who came to Europe in 2015 and 2016, according to a Center analysis. The flow dramatically fell with an agreement between the EU and Turkey in March 2016. In 2017 and 2018, refugees increasingly entered Europe through different entry points, including Italy and Spain.

An estimated 1.2 million immigrants lived in Greece in 2017, according to data from the United Nations. They made up roughly 11% of Greece’s population that year.
