Russia congratulates Greece on Independence Day

Despite the disruption to daily life and the postponement of Greek National Day celebrations, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulatory messages to President of the Greek Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Greek Independence Day.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also congratulated his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias on the occasion of Greek Independence Day on Wednesday, stressing the importance of bilateral relations on international and regional issues.

Lavrov said Russia "places great emphasis on collaboration with Greece on top international and regional issues. We are prepared to activate further the relations between the foreign ministries, for the stability and security in Europe and the tumultuous neighbouring countries."

In his message, which was posted on social media by the Russian embassy in Athens, Putin noted that relations between Russia and Greece are based on eons-long cultural and spiritual traditions, and expressed the certainty that developing constructive relations in several sectors serves the interests of both countries and all Europe.
