Greece’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Dimitris Economou on Monday announced the immediate demolition of 450 buildings on land of the Hellinikon project.
The announcement follows the approval for the demolition by the Central Council of Architecture.
“In the dramatic circumstances of the pandemic, the need for such strategically important moves becomes even more significant,” said the Minister, adding that the decision “opens the way to the immediate start of works in the property.”
The area under the project comprises 958 buildings. Some of those that will be preserved include the old former East Airport of Athens building, facilities of the Air Force, three churches, and facilities related to the water company (EYDAP), the Public Power Corporation, the tram, the Argyroupoli station metro and the so-called British hangar (pagoda), among others.
