A bomb dating back to World War II was discovered at Syntagma Square on Tuesday morning.
Bomb disposal experts immediately shut down and evacuated a part of Syntagma Square in downtown Athens in order to safely remove the explosive device.
The bomb was discovered on the corner of Nikis and Ermou streets – across the square from Parliament – by workers with the Athens Water and Sewerage company who were digging in the area.
Experts need to determine whether the bomb is still active before removing it.
Update: Police lifted the cordon after a chunk of metal initially believed to be an old mortar shell was identified as a machine part.
