Greek flag on the Acropolis at half mast

Acropolis flag at half mask

The Greek flag on the Acropolis is flying at half mast in honour of World War II resistance hero Manolis Glezos, who will be buried today.

Glezos passed away on Monday aged 97.

In 1941 during Greece’s occupation by Nazi Germany, Glezos was just 18-years-old when he and his friend Apostolos Santas, a 19-year-old law student, climbed onto the Acropolis in the middle of the night and tore down the flag bearing the swastika unnoticed.

In a post on social media Tuesday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the gesture was a tribute to a “great Greek.”
