Dozens of residents in Patras, mainly elderly, disregarded the government's lockdown restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic and attended church service on Sunday.

According to information, churchgoers attended the church of Agia Triada in Patras at the invitation of the Priest, to receive Holy Communion.

Police were immediately called to the church and fined those who were in attendance for violating the regulations to stop the coronavirus spread.

The church was immediately closed and residents returned home.

A few days ago, Education and Religions Minister Niki Kerameus announced that liturgies at churches and monasteries could be carried out during Easter behind closed doors.

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece said that although services will be performed, the public was encouraged to stay home and continue praying, in order to protect their fellow beings.

Yesterday, authorities in Greece extended the coronavirus lockdown until Monday, April 27.
