EU Defence Ministers go to war on coronavirus

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell on Monday chaired a video conference with the European Union’s Defence Ministers where they discussed the contribution of armed forces to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Greece’s Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, attended the meeting and spoke of the help military medical and nursing staff and military hospitals offered in treating Covid-19 cases, adding that the government had also enlisted military factories for producing protective health-related supplies both for the armed forces and the public.

Panagiotopoulos also referred to Greece's "substantial contribution” to Operation IRINI, the European Union’s plan to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya through the launch of a new joint military operation in the Mediterranean.

It was also decided to explore setting up a task force led by the EU Military Staff to better exchange information and share best practices among EU member states, in full coordination with NATO.
