Following widespread damage wreaked by the bad weather over the weekend, Greece's civil protection agency declared a “state of emergency” for Skiathos, Skopelos, South Pelion and the Zagora-Mouresi Municipality.
In Skopelos, heavy rainfall which lasted for more than five hours, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, caused extensive damage in the town, where roads turned into rivers. Houses and shops also became flooded.
The streets and villages of the South Pelion were also turned into rushing rivers, as the severe weather lasted for about four hours.
For the second time in the last ten days, the Zagora-Mouresi Municipality was affected, resulting in huge damage to infrastructure projects, road construction and major landslides.
On the road linking Zagora and Horefto, rocks, huge volumes of soil and mud have made the route impassable.
On Monday, machinery and residents started clearing the roads, while local authorities sought to restore problems with the water supply and drainage network.
