Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis was caught violating the lockdown measures imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The leader of the MeRA25 party ignored the ban on unnecessary movement on Thursday, drove to Piraeus port and caught a ferry to Aegina, where he has a villa.
According to comments made by Yiannis Zorbas, the mayor of Aegina, police had been conducting routine inspections when they signalled to Varoufakis to pull over.
The former minister slowed down, but refused to stop, telling officers that he is an "MP". When he was asked to present documents explaining his reason for being outdoors, he said, “Do you know who I am?” and drove off.
Varoufakis commented on this incident in a post on Twitter. He remarked that he had gone to speak in Parliament that day about the government’s stance on the prospect of a Eurobond to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and then returned home.
"If they want to be ridiculed, let them fine me 150 euros. If they want to fine a member of Parliament for his parliamentary duties, they will weaken the the notion of a fine,” Varoufakis stated during an interview with Thema 104.6 radio station.
