Greek President thanks Malta and Ireland for their solidarity during pandemic and talks of easing restrictions

Greece’s President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Wednesday thanked the Presidents of Malta, George Vella and of Ireland, Michael Higgins for their letters of solidarity over the coronavirus pandemic.

During their telephone conversation, the Greek President emphasised the need for a careful and gradual lifting while all agreed for the need for cooperation, solidarity and equal sharing of responsibilities among European partners.

Ireland’s President expressed his solidarity to Greece on the handling of the migration crisis and stressed the need for a common European response to both this issue and to climate change.

Also on Wednesday, the Greek President spoke separately with Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece and with Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres and All Albania, and thanked them for the support they provide to the faithful during the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sakellaropoulou particularly noted the inspiring and guiding role of the church, and wished both church leaders Happy Easter.

The Archbishops called for hope and faith, and expressed the certainty that the rallying of human solidarity will overcome the pandemic and its repercussions.
