The director of the Mamatsio, Hospital of Kozani, Stergios Ganatsios announced on Wednesday the opening of a state-of-the art laboratory for molecular biology that will serve five hospitals in western Macedonia.

According to Ganatsios, the lab will be able to collect up to 100 samples for coronavirus testing per day, and present the results in less than 12 hours.

Housed in a separate space within the hospital, the lab will also provide test analyses for other illnesses as well.

The analysis machine cost the Region of West Macedonia 54,000 euros and is operated by four molecular biologists, hired recently on fast-track procedures. It is expected to help facilitate speedy diagnosis in an area of Greece with "a heavy epidemiological load," as authorities have said recently.
