Three cases of thefts were thoroughly investigated by the Mytilini Security Directorate, with the assistance of the Department of Criminological Investigations of the General Regional Police Directorate of the North Aegean and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Northern Greece.
The criminals in these cases were identified as two illegal immigrants aged 20 and 29, against whom a criminal case was filed for cases of theft and damage to property, according to Lesvos Post.
In particular, after proper evaluation and utilization of data, it emerged that the 20-year-old and the 29-year-old, acted together between March 15 and March 21. The pair entered a house in the greater Mytilene area, breaking a window for the purpose of theft. Although the window was broken, they had not stolen anything.
In addition, as the 20-year-old was ascertained, he is involved in two more cases of burglary in the greater Mytilene. These crimes were committed in the last month and a half, in which 400 euros was stolen, as well as electrical appliances and various tools worth 3,000 euros approximately.
The 20-year-old was arrested on Tuesday in Moria to the north of Mytilene by police officers of the Mytilini Security Directorate, and was charged with committing another theft and violating gun laws. The preliminary and current investigations are carried out by the Mytilini Security Directorate.
Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants are crammed into the Moria migrant camp that was built to house only a few thousand people.
Lesvos was once a quiet island and relatively unaffected by large-scale tourism unlike many other islands of Greece, but since 2015 has experienced an exponential increase in crime when the first migrant crisis began.
Locals on the island report how their lives have been changed for the worse with theft and beatings becoming common, as well as attacks against churches and olive groves.
