In the wake of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, two year 10 Canadian students have responded to the growing need for medical protective equipment and created a fundraiser that has given people a way to help while being socially distant at home.

The year 10 students Apostolos Zezos and Jamie Selfe believe that it is their duty, along with fellow citizens to help the grandfathers and grandmothers during this crucial time.

At the time of writing, Canada has 45,354 reported cases of coronavirus and 2,465 related deaths.

The Hellenic Home for the Aged in Toronto is experiencing an onset of outbreaks, reporting 28 resident-infections, 6 deaths and 17 staff infections as of April 24th.

Face masks have been a valuable tool in the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19.

To support the most vulnerable, the Upper Canada College Hellenic Culture Club which the two year 10 students are apart of, is raising money to purchase masks, gowns, gloves and other protective equipment from a confirmed, direct supplier.

Funds collected will be used to provide the residents and staff, that are amongst the most vulnerable in our communities, with the required protective equipment.

A generous donor has also offered to match all donations.

Apostolos and Jamie recall the words of Dr. Tsiordas, Greece’s infectious diseases expert, who vividly stated the need to protect our seniors is of the essence because, “We can not exist, or have an identity, without them.”
