Icons stolen from a Monastery in Epirus, set to be auctioned at a private gallery

Two of the hundreds of icons stolen from churches and monasteries in Epirus between 2000-2010, have been put up for auction by a private gallery in Europe.

“Apparently the vast majority of the area’s unique treasures have ended up abroad and are gradually being sold. This is not the first time that stolen icons have been auctioned at a gallery abroad. The same thing happened a few years ago when icons were found in London and Germany,” Epirus Post reported.

The images posted on the auction gallery website, show that the icons have been well preserved.

The icon of Panagia Portaitissa is set for €12,000, while the other icon of Christ the Pantocrator has a starting price of €10,000.

According to sources, the icons come from the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Makrino, Zagori, which were stolen in November 2007.
