6 magnitude earthquake shakes the island of Crete

Breaking News: An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale, jolted the Greek island of Crete this afternoon.

Its epicentre was 118 kilometres south of Ierapetra at the depth of 10 km.

Ierapetra is a town on the south coast of Crete.

It is not yet known the level of damage or injuries on the island.

According to reports, the quake was felt in Heraklion and Lassithi.

An aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 occurred 10 minutes later.

The commander of the Fire Service of Crete, Demosthenes Bountourakis, told AMNA that a Fire Brigade vehicle is already patrolling the city and around Ierapetra, where so far there is no damage.

“We are monitoring the developments and we have implemented all the planned measures. However, so far there has been no call for help,” Boudourakis said.
