Low cost airline Wizz Air announced the launch of six new routes from London Luton Airport to holiday destinations in Portugal and Greece, as part of its planning for the easing of restrictions.
European flights have come to a virtual standstill during the coronavirus lockdowns, with only a few services operating for essential travel, such as people being repatriated, going to work or to transport medical supplies.
They are planning for the easing of travel restrictions by starting new routes to Portugal from 16 June and to Greece from July.
Wizz Air also noted that they have introduced new rules, including compulsory face masks for passengers and staff as well as gloves for crew, to make people feel more confident about flying. The airline says it encourages travellers to observe physical distancing at the airport but it will fill middle seats on aircrafts if there is enough demand.
Owain Jones, the managing director of Wizz Air UK, said: “Although travel is currently restricted by government regulations, we are planning for the easing of restrictions as the situation improves and our customers are able to start travelling again.”
It is not yet clear whether traditional summer holiday destinations will be open for business this year.
Flights will depart for Faro, Portugal from 16 June, and for Zakynthos, Heraklion, Corfu and Rhodes in Greece at the beginning of July.
Wizz became one of the first European airlines to restart commercial routes from London Luton and Vienna on May 1, carrying people from Bulgaria and Romania amongst other places, which the airline said was for work.
