Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis discussed the global challenge posed by the coronavirus pandemic and the measures taken to address it.

During the conversation which took place over the telephone on Wednesday, Pope Francis recognised Greece's efforts to protect the most vulnerable groups, such as refugees, during the virus and expressed regret about the lack of wider European support in relocating unaccompanied refugee minors.

They also discussed the government's green policy, in the context of environmental sensitivity of both Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Mitsotakis extended an invitation to the church leader to visit Greece again when circumstances allow, suggesting that the visit include landmark sites of the early history of Christianity, "in the footsteps of Apostle Paul."
