Professor of History at the University of Athens, Maria Efthimiou, submitted her resignation from the “Greece 2021” committee, which has the mission of organising a series of events to celebrate two hundred years since the Greek Revolution that won Greece’s freedom after 400 years of Ottoman Turkish barbarity and occupation.

According to the front page of the ESTIA newspaper, the distinguished professor sent a secret letter to the President of the Committee, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki and politely resigned after a string of controversies.

Earlier this month, the “Greece 2021” social media account reproduced an excerpt of an article by Professor Aristides Hatzis that viciously attacked the great Ioannis Kapodistrias, one of Greece’s greatest independence heroes, provoking an angry reaction, as reported by Greek City Times.

The short governance of Kapodistrias turned the First Greek Republic into what was a previously forgotten, underdeveloped and backwater area of the Ottoman Empire into a modern state with schools, a university and democracy.

Along with education institutions, Kapodistrias turned the Greek militias into a professional and modern military force, established Greece’s first Military Academy, orphanage and hospitals, and even modern European agricultural methods.

Under his leadership, he also expanded Greece’s borders into Central Greece.

After widespread condemnation in calling Kapodistrias a dictator, “Greece 2021” did not backdown in their belief that he was a dictator.

After disgracing Kapodistrias, the “Greece 2021” committee then set their sights on war hero Georgios Karaiskakis who famously immortalised the stadium name where Olympiakos FC now play out of.

Over the weekend, the “Greece 2021” website, published an article that said Karaiskakis was a sexual deviant with abnormal sexual behaviour.

The article has since been deleted from the website.

It did not take long for Twitter to blow up in the second insult in a matter of weeks against Greece’s greatest heroes, with strong calls for the entire resignation of the committee.
