The Greek government has announced it will cover the accommodation costs of anyone who tests positive for coronavirus while holidaying in the country.
“They will be hosted in a hotel and the cost will burden the Greek state,” government spokesman Stelios Petsas said on Monday.
Petsas added that Greece has been paying for the accommodation of those coming to the country and have to remain in quarantine, ever since Greece closed its borders.
“We will continue to do so, with one difference. We expect far fewer cases – or hopefully none – as the epidemiological cycles in the European countries from where we expect tourist flows are coordinating downwards,” the Minister continued.
A similar plan was announced by Cyprus last week, where they vowed to cover all costs- accommodation, medication, and food, for patients and their families.
“Our aim is to ensure the maximum safety for residents and tourists,” Petsas concluded. It is not clear whether the Greek state will also pay for food and medicine.
Greece’s borders will be “open” from June 15th, with flights permitted to land in Athens and Thessaloniki.
