Protests over the death of George Floyd continue in Athens

Advertisment

Greek authorities closed several central metro stations in Athens after hundreds of people gathered at Syntagma Square, in solidarity with anti-racism protests in the US following the police killing of George Floyd.

Floyd died on May 25th, after a Minnesota police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes while he was handcuffed on the ground for allegedly using a counterfeit US$20 bill.

The protest started outside Parliament and moved to a nearby police precinct in the Kolonaki neighbuorhood.

Chanting slogans against racism and police violence, the demonstrators tried to reach the US Embassy in Athens, but were stopped by police on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. According to reports, there were some minor scuffles and one person was taken into custody.

In a similar march on Wednesday, firebombs were hurled outside the US Embassy in Athens. Reuters journalists saw demonstrators throw several flaming objects which erupted into flames on the street towards the heavily-guarded embassy in central Athens. Police responded with rounds of teargas.

Meanhwile, a separate group of protesters gathered at Syntgama Square against global warming and climate change.
