The first and last party for the summer season was held at a beach bar in Alimos, located in the Athens Riviera, after more than 1,000 people gathered on Thursday night to party.
The event was advertised on social media for a week, despite the rules for public and social gatherings.
The beach bar was imposed with a two-month lockout and a fine of €20,000.
The mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis on his social media account, emphasised that "no one can play with public health. No one can despise the hard work that our entire society has done for the past 3 months to avoid the worst."
"We support the shops and we want them to be open. But the shops must also help themselves, respect the whole society and public health," he added.
The mayor concluded by noting: "At the same time, we send a message to all beach shops: to respect people's health and the rules that are the same for everyone. To offer entertainment and fun, without exceeding the limits set by the times and the rules of the state."
Earlier this week, Elias Mossialos, Professor in Health Policy and Head of Department at the London School of Economics stated that some citizens in Mykonos took the virus for granted, as they partied on the cosmopolitan island and ignored the government imposed safety measures. As a result, at ‘Alemagou’, a well-known beach bar on Ftelia Beach, inspectors imposed a “lockout” of 60 days, until the beginning of August, and a fine of €20,000 to the owners, for non-compliance with public safety regulations, according to SKAI.
