Fire breaks out at the Holy Monastery of Varnakova (VIDEO)

By 4 years ago

A large fire broke out on Sunday night at the Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Varnakova in Fokida, ANT News reported.

Twenty-six firefighters with eight vehicles evacuated the nuns to safety and managed to control the fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to information from Npress, the monastery has completely burned down.

The icon of Panagia Varnakova, which had been 'damaged' by disasters over years (in January 2017, a fire broke out in the boiler room and quickly spread throughout the entire monastery), has also been completely burned.

The monastery is situated on Mount Vardoussia some 20km away from Efpalio and about 25km northeast of Nafpaktos. It was built in 1077 by Saint Arsenios Varnakovitis, on a small hill which lies within a vast forest of oaks and wild chestnuts.

So far, the cause of the fire is unknown.
